I really enjoy doing head shots… I like the challenge of capturing an image that is professional but not stuffy, appropriate for the clients purpose, and portrays the individual honestly.
In lifestyle and portrait photography there is so much that can be done with composition and lighting. This is true of head shots as well, but the challenge with a head shot is showcasing the client without the use of a landscape or other elements that help to communicate to the viewer about the individual. If you were branding yourself, the image that your audience sees represents your brand. What do you want it to say about you?
This particular client needed head shots for her acting comp card. For casting purposes a typical head and shoulders shot is industry standard but this client still wanted to convey some personality. She decided on something fun and comfortable to wear because it was important to her that the image didn’t look stuffy, but still had some classic elements to it.
This client is a wellness coach and needed a head shot to represent her in a publication where she would be a contributor. We were able to accomplish the publications requirements which included a warmer black and white finish, and specific composition requirements. To date this is one of my favorite head shots. So much personality coming through!
This client is an attorney that specializes in creative firms, start ups, and small businesses. He requested that his head shot be professional but still somewhat relaxed and definitely not stuffy… He is very down to earth and I think this image conveys that.
This head shot has a sophisticated feel and almost reads like a fashion portrait, which is completely appropriate for those working in fashion, music, creative fields, and talent management.
Here are some tips for getting the most out of your head shot.
-If you work in a field that calls for a classic head and shoulders style head shot, you can use your clothing to help your individuality shine through.
-For women I always suggest full coverage foundation and makeup that is applied just a little heavier handed than you would for everyday.
-Spend a little extra time styling your hair
-Wear something that you feel good in! This goes a long way…trust me!
-Try and relax, especially if you dont particularly enjoy having your picture taken. I will do everything I can to make you look your best including angling your head and shoulders just the right way, tipping your chin and shooting from an angle that is flattering, as well as encouraging you to incorporate your natural body language into the shot.
